Windsor High School Students Honor Vets | | | In a single day, more than 1,000 Windsor High students created a poignant tribute to the thousands of U.S. soldiers who lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Class by class, students from all 9TH, 10TH, 11TH AND 12TH grades at Windsor High School today walked one-mile from the school up to Windsor Center to place more than 5,600 American flags on the Town Green.
The student-created memorial lies next to Windsor's bronze eagle War Memorial statue, across from the Windsor Public Library and only steps away from Town Hall, the site of Windsor's annual Veterans Day ceremony. (see ceremony info below).
This dramatic memorial to fallen heroes will remain standing until mid-November when the students will return to carefully remove the flags one by one. The powerful, visual representation was spearheaded by Windsor High Social Studies teachers Nancy Crilly-Kirk, Abbey Lowe, Christopher Todd and Amy Tria.
This is just one of the many ways that Windsor students will salute America's veterans in November. As in past years, Windsor Public Schools will be open on Veterans Day, featuring many programs and activities to teach students about why Americans honor veterans. Events will include ceremonies, class activities, and in-class conversations with U.S. veterans themselves.
